What is happening to our climate?

An international team of scientists on Tuesday expressed deep concern that human activity is driving the Earth into a climate crisis that could threaten the lives of up to 6 billion people this century. They frankly stated: "We are afraid of the uncharted waters that we have now entered."

Writing in the journal Biosciences, a coalition of 12 researchers from North America, Europe and Asia says: "As scientists, we are increasingly being asked to tell the public the truth about the crises we face in simple and direct words. The truth is, we are rocked by the fury of extreme weather events in 2023."

Climate anomalies recorded around the world in 2023 have shocked the scientific community. The authors argue that record-breaking temperatures and record-low sea ice levels indicate that human activity is "pushing our planetary systems into dangerous instability."

Such instability could mean that this century, up to 6 billion of the nearly 8 billion people on Earth could end up in regions that will become uninhabitable due to climate impacts.

The report is a major update to the 2019 bulletin, which was signed by more than 15,000 scientists from 163 countries. It called on governments to make major and rapid changes to current economies with high emissions or face "unknown suffering" around the world.

Scientists also warn that simply switching to renewable energy instead of fossil fuels will not be enough to ensure the continuation of natural and human systems. In their recommendations, they call for:
  • Implement policies that help reduce resource consumption.
  • Global cooperation for climate justice.
  • Reorientation of economic measures to prioritize human welfare over growth.
  • Support for education and the rights of women and girls.
Despite the alarming warning, the authors end their report with a message of hope: "This is our moment to make profound changes for all life on Earth. We must embrace it with unwavering courage and determination to create a legacy of change that will stand the test of time."
