Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of remote access technologies such as RDP and VPN is growing rapidly, as many companies have transferred their employees to remote work, which usually involves connecting to internal networks remotely.

According to the statistics of the search engine Shodan, last Sunday, March 29, 2020, the number of RDP endpoints increased from 3,000,000 at the beginning of the year to almost 4,400,000. This data includes only endpoints operating on the standard RDP port 3389.

However, Shodan founder and head John Matherly writes that a similar spike in activity is also observed on port 3388, which is regularly used by system administrators to hide RDP from attacks. According to Mazerli, in this case, activity increased by 36.8% (from 60,000 at the beginning of the year to 80,000 now).

Likewise, the number of different servers using VPN protocols such as IKE and PPTP is growing, from 7,500,000 to nearly 10,000,000 today.

However, these numbers only reflect the situation with corporate VPN servers, while consumer-grade VPN usage is also growing rapidly. The fact is that since most users are now stuck at home, they are increasingly resorting to using VPN applications to bypass geo-blocking. For example, last week NordVPN reported a 165% increase in user numbers since March 11, while Atlas VPN reported a 124% increase in VPN usage among US users alone.

This data is also confirmed by representatives of the site Top10VPN, who note the growth of the entire market as a whole and, in particular, record a 65% increase in demand for VPN in the USA (compared to the previous quarter).
