The parking payment app requested too much personal data for hackers to ignore it.
EasyPark Group, the leading operator of remote parking payment applications in Europe, has been hit by a hacker attack. The company's list of services includes such well-known applications as RingGo and ParkMobile. The company discovered the breach on December 10, 2023, and promptly notified customers whose data might have been compromised.
The attackers gained access to RingGo's archives with names, phone numbers, home addresses, email addresses, and partially credit card information. According to representatives of EasyPark Group, stolen fragments of card numbers cannot be used to make payments and steal money, but there is a risk of phishing attacks.
The company immediately informed the regulatory authorities of the EU, the UK, Sweden and Switzerland about the incident. At the same time, it is noted that the American ParkMobile application with 50 million customers was not affected. Only some RingGo services integrated with EasyPark technologies have experienced problems.
The company did not disclose the exact number of victims, but it is known that most of them are located in Europe. It also clarifies that approximately 950 users of the RingGo app in the UK may be affected. At the moment, hackers have not made any ransom demands, and there is no evidence that the stolen information was used in fraudulent campaigns or was made publicly available.
Experts in the field of cybersecurity call the incident another "wake-up call". Parking apps are regularly hacked due to the presence of a large amount of users personal data.
For example, in March 2021, the ParkMobile app in Atlanta suffered a data breach of 21 million customers. Among the victims even turned out to be several famous personalities like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Then the reason was a vulnerability in third-party software.
The company itself assured that it is taking all necessary measures to investigate the incident, strengthen protection and prevent similar incidents in the future. Nevertheless, it is obvious that all such services need to pay increased attention to cybersecurity issues.
