AI is not a toy for children: photos of schoolgirls became the reason for the ban on deepfakes in the United States.

In the United States, a new bill has been proposed aimed at combating the distribution of deepfects of intimate images without the consent of the people depicted on them. The initiative was put forward by Democrat Joseph Morelle together with Republican Tom Keane. The draft law "On preventing the creation of deepfakes of Intimate Images" (Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act) provides for criminal liability for unauthorized distribution of such materials.

The reason for the bill was an incident at Westfield High School in New Jersey, where boys distributed artificial intelligence-generated nude images of their classmates without their consent. The girls contacted the school administration, after which the incident was widely publicized.

A 14-year-old student, whose image was used in the generated images, launched an initiative to protect victims of such actions. Together with her mother, she held a number of meetings with lawmakers and was present in Washington when the bill was announced.

"What happened to me and my classmates is unacceptable. I'm here to push for changes and fight for laws so that no one else feels as helpless as I do," the student said.

Experts note that modern artificial intelligence tools make it easy to create fake images that are difficult to distinguish from the real ones. This is a serious concern, given the ease of sharing such images on social networks and instant messengers.

Despite the existence of laws in some states aimed at combating the spread of fake porn and giving victims the right to file civil claims, federal legislation still lags behind the development of technology. The new Morellet and Keane bill also provides for the possibility of filing civil lawsuits by victims.

In his statement, Morelle stressed the importance of taking action. According to him, we should not wait for the next mass incident. Such cases happen every day to women all over the world, and it's time to give them back their strength. Morelle's office has not yet commented on further steps to advance the bill.
