Can one mailing affect the results of the presidential election?

U.S. federal agencies said Iran had sent unsolicited emails containing material stolen from Donald Trump's campaign. The data was not publicly available and was used to create distrust in the country's electoral system.

At the moment, there is no information that recipients associated with Joe Biden's campaign somehow reacted to the mailing. Such actions are regarded as part of foreign interference aimed at undermining confidence in the US elections. Earlier this year, Trump accused Iran of trying to hack his campaign, which was confirmed by further investigations.

Trump's campaign said Iran wants to help Vice President Kamala Harris, who replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee, as she is less tough on Iran than Trump. Trump on his social network accused Harris and her campaign of illegal surveillance, calling the incident "an Iranian affair".

Harris's headquarters, in turn, said that it has been cooperating with law enforcement since the detection of hacking attempts. A spokesman for Harris' headquarters clarified that no materials were directly received by the campaign, and several people received letters resembling spam. Law enforcement officials confirmed that several people associated with the Biden campaign did receive the emails, but were unlikely to realize their contents, as they looked like phishing attempts.

Iran denies all accusations, saying they are baseless and uncredible. Tehran officials stressed that Iran is not interested in interfering in the U.S. election and demanded that U.S. authorities provide evidence.

Earlier, U.S. officials said U.S. intelligence was confident that Iran was seeking to harm Trump's campaign. Experts have repeatedly warned that the IRGC is conducting a highly skilled and persistent phishing campaign to collect intelligence data on behalf of Tehran. Earlier this year, Microsoft and Google said they had documented attempts by Iranian hackers to hack into the campaigns of Trump and Joe Biden, even before Biden dropped out of the race.

Recall that on the eve of the 2020 presidential election, the US authorities accused Iran of trying to interfere in the elections by sending emails allegedly on behalf of the right-wing radical organization Proud Boys, which supports Trump, to Democrats from Florida. In 2021, the US Department of Justice indicted two Iranians for participating in this operation.
