Discord has announced the rollout of a new end-to-end encryption (E2EE) protocol named DAVE, designed to secure audio and video calls on its platform. This protocol will be implemented for voice and video in direct messages, group direct messages, voice channels, and Go Live streams. However, it's important to note that text messages on Discord will remain unencrypted, allowing for content moderation.

DAVE is publicly auditable and has been reviewed by cybersecurity firm Trail of Bits. It uses WebRTC for encoding and Message Layer Security (MLS) for encryption and group key exchange, ensuring that only participants in a call can decrypt the media shared during their session. This means that new participants cannot access past media, and departing members cannot access future media.

Discord maintains existing transport encryption for audio and video between clients and its selective forwarding unit (SFU), ensuring that only authenticated participants have access to the call data. This development aligns with broader efforts in the tech industry to enhance privacy and security in communications.
