The United States accuses hackers from Iran of trying to influence the 2024 elections.

The U.S. Department of Justice has charged three Iranian hackers allegedly involved in a cyberattack on former President Donald Trump's election campaign. According to official records, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, Yasar Balaghi and Masoud Jalili acted on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), one of Iran's key structures known for its cyber espionage activities. The charges cover the period from 2020 to September 2024.

Hackers hacked and stole Trump campaign documents, and also targeted US officials and media representatives. Their actions, according to the FBI, were aimed at undermining the democratic processes in the country. In addition, they tried to pass the stolen information to Biden's team and media representatives, but their attempts were unsuccessful, as none of the recipients responded to their messages.

The prosecution alleges that the cyberattacks were also aimed at "avenging the death" of General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in January 2020 during a US military operation. Jalili, who is said to be a member of the Basij paramilitary structure, and two other hackers have been involved in a series of attacks over the years that have affected both U.S. official institutions and international organizations.

In parallel with the accusations, the US and UK authorities issued a joint warning about the tactics used by Iranian cyber groups and imposed sanctions on seven Iranian officials linked to the IRGC. In particular, these sanctions relate to hacker attacks aimed at undermining the electoral process in the United States in 2020 and 2024.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further charges against individuals involved in attacks designed to undermine the credibility of the U.S. election.
