The city's government agencies don't seem to learn from their mistakes.
The Washington Federal Election Commission has been targeted by a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of personal data of more than 600,000 residents of the city. The stolen information includes the last four digits of social security numbers, driver's license numbers, and home addresses of voters.
The incident became known on October 5, after a user under the nickname "pwncoder" put up information for sale on one of the hacker forums. Experts believe that attackers gained access to voter data by hacking the website of a hosting provider. All internal networks were scanned for vulnerabilities and concluded that the databases of the electoral commission itself were not directly compromised. The main suspects are the RansomVC group.
Now the official website of the department is disabled. Representatives said they continue to assess the scale of the incident and take measures to protect systems. The investigation involves specialists from the FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security.
It is worth noting that this is the second cyber attack on the Washington authorities in 2023. Earlier, hackers broke into the local health insurance system and published personal information of high-ranking intelligence officers on the network. Given the large number of officials living in the capital, current and former government officials may also be among the victims.
Although some information from electoral lists is publicly available (such as names and party affiliations), access to personal data is strictly restricted in accordance with local laws.
