A new study found that the Telegram messenger, which was initially positioned as a more secure alternative to WhatsApp, is now becoming a haven for cybercriminals. Cyberint specialists presented their findings in the report . According to the researchers, cybercriminals sell data on Telegram, and also post information about various leaks there.

The reason lies in the ease of use and lack of strict moderation in the messenger. In the past, dumps of various leaks could be found on dark web forums, where criminals gain access using special browsers and credentials. Hackers love the dark web for its closeness and isolation.

Telegram, however, directed this activity in a slightly different direction. The app is easy to download and configure, and the "secret" chats are end-to-end encrypted. Group conversations do not have such protection, but to get into them, the user will need an invitation or a special link. In addition, Telegram allows you to create truly spacious groups, the number of members of which can reach up to 200 thousand. This, according to Cyberint analysts, is the reason for the transition of cybercriminals to Telegram.

One of the experts, Tal Samra, even reported more than 100 percent growth in the use of the messenger for hacking purposes. In particular, researchers refer us to a Telegram channel called “combolist”, which at the time of closure had about 47 thousand members. These are the channels where cybercriminals share information about leaks.

Cyberint also said that the dark web itself is provoking a similar increase in the use of Telegram for cybercriminal purposes. For example, experts have recorded a jump in the number of links to groups in this messenger posted on the dark web forums. Over the past year, for example, their number has grown by more than 172 thousand.
