Who do local authorities suspect of digital intrusion?

Bermuda is working to restore public services that were shut down after a "sophisticated and deliberate" cyberattack on government systems last week, the island's premier David Burt said on Monday. The attack also caused some disruptions to the Internet, email, and telephone services.

"All departments were affected. The Department of Information and Digital Technology is working quickly to restore service," the Bermuda government said last Thursday.

While local authorities are investigating who is behind this cyber incident, their suspicions have already fallen on Russian hackers. At a press conference held on September 21, Burt expressed his assumption, but refused to share any details, citing national security.

"It remains to be seen, but it is clear that there is a certain external factor affecting public services, as well as initial indications that the attack is originating from Russia," Burt said.

"Restoration work is well underway and we are working to establish a timetable that people can follow. A schedule that will be used for the safe return of our systems to operational mode," the Prime Minister added.

The violation itself occurred on Wednesday evening, September 20, and was discovered by police officers only the next morning. Responsible specialists tried to isolate the intrusion site and disable it, but they were forced to disable all devices connected to the network altogether, and then completely deactivate the network itself.

So far, the Bermuda authorities have no reason to believe that any data was stolen, but anything is possible. Meanwhile, despite the fact that part of the local infrastructure was affected, transport, educational and medical services are working without interruptions.
