Users will not be left without an alternative — AI has already made adjustments to the process of interacting with the OS.
In the latest insider release of Windows 11 under build number 25967, Microsoft finally removed the Cortana app from its operating system.
"After updating to this build, the Cortana app will be removed. We have discontinued support for Cortana, " announced Windows Insider team members Amanda Langowski and Brandon Leblanc.
Previously, the personal assistant was deeply integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem, especially in English-speaking countries. However, since August of this year, representatives of the Redmond company began to gradually restrict its work.
Microsoft's decision did not come as a surprise to users who follow the company's press releases. So, in a special document published in June of this year, the company has already warned users that support for Cortana will completely stop in the fall of 2023. At the same time, support for the mobile version of Cortana ended more than two years ago .
However, Microsoft will not leave fans of voice assistants without an alternative. In September 20, it became known that the new AI assistant Microsoft Copilot will replace Cortana and significantly surpass the latter in functionality.
"Copilot uniquely leverages the context and intelligence of the Internet, your work data, and what you're currently doing on your PC to provide better assistance, putting your privacy and security first," said Yusuf Mehdi, CEO of Microsoft.
Copilot started rolling out to all Windows users on September 26 as part of the latest Windows 11 22H2 update.
Microsoft also suggests that former users of Cortana will be able to replace it with some other recently released Redmond products, including the new Bing search engine based on artificial intelligence, as well as the ability to control voice in Windows 11.
