According to reviews, contactless cards for paying for goods and services are becoming more and more popular every day, competing with classic plastic bank cards. And this is not surprising, because they offer no less extensive functionality, including the ability to store and transfer funds, as well as remotely manage accounts using online payment systems such as LiqPay, mobile banking and Internet banking, including Privat 24, Pumba Online, Raiffeisen Online, My Alfa-bank / Alpha click. With the help of payment devices that operate on integrated circuits on a contactless principle, today purchases are made and travel on the metro is paid (for example, in the subway in Kharkov), they are used to pay for access to entertainment establishments.

Examples of smart cards, which are based on a microcircuit and a flat winding antenna, can also be:
  • electronic passes;
  • club cards;
  • biometric passports.
The popularity of smart cards in the modern world - especially with regard to the ISO 14443 (Proximity Card) and Vicinity Card standards - is due to their exceptional ease of use and relatively low price. Judge for yourself: to use a contactless card, you just need to bring it closer to the terminal. The range of the device often makes it possible not to get the card out of the credit card or wallet when reading it. Despite the simplicity and convenience of contactless cards, the public is still haunted by the topic of their safety, which gives rise to many myths. Let's try to figure out the main ones.

Myth 1: Payments using standard bank cards are safer than contactless
In fact, contactless card payment differs from plastic payment in the classic banking format Visa or MasterCard only technologically. Moreover, payment "by air" is even safer, since such transactions are protected by the same EMV standard as cards with a chip, and it is a priori more reliable than the magnetic track of the simplest Visa / Master / American Express cards, which can be simply copied. The contactless procedure generates one-time payment data for each payment.

Myth 2. Armed with a homemade reader, attackers can discreetly withdraw money from a contactless card in a crowded place.
Experiments show that for operation the reader should not be too far from the contactless card. It will be extremely difficult for a fraudster to approach unnoticed enough to extract money or data from a card. Probably, more powerful proximity card readers could cope with hacking, but, according to experts, such equipment should be large - no less than a trolley from a supermarket.

Myth 3: Money can be stolen from a contactless card using a mini-transaction function that does not require a PIN code
It is not so attractive to steal money and buy something at your expense using a contactless card, because each independent electronic payment terminal is registered by concluding an agreement with an acquiring bank. And for this, the seller is required to present the relevant identification documents, which allows, if necessary, to easily calculate it.

Myth 4. If the owner loses the card, fraudsters can easily use it to pay for purchases
A similar situation can happen with an ordinary bank card "Visa", so the myth in this case is, rather, the phrase "no problem". The owner will receive notifications about each withdrawal of funds from the lost card. But, having discovered that the contactless plastic card has disappeared, you should not expect such messages, but you should immediately notify the bank so that it is blocked. Summing up the above, we can conclude: by deciding to order a contactless card, you will indeed receive a reliable and convenient payment instrument with multifactor protection. But do not neglect the standard tips for ensuring the safety of money: keep an eye on the card and keep the PIN-code secret, and if you want to protect the card from a third-party reader, get a special screened wallet.
