The attackers confirmed the data leak in an original way.
In the Clark County School District (CCSD), Nevada, a cyberattack occurred, as a result of which hackers gained access to student data and began distributing it to parents. The school district serves more than 300,000 students and 15,000 teachers and is one of the largest in the United States.
The cyberattack itself was confirmed on October 16, although it was initially noticed on October 5. According to the portal DataBreaches.net, the SingularityMD group claimed responsibility for the incident. Hackers claim to have breached the county's systems and have access to a large amount of confidential information. As evidence, cybercriminals sent out emails to students 'parents with a PDF attachment, allegedly including students' personal data, such as names, addresses, student ID numbers, photos, and other sensitive information.
The school district has taken steps to improve security, including disabling access to Google Workspace from external accounts and resetting student passwords. However, hackers claim that their actions continue, and offer the district to pay a ransom to stop the leak and delete the stolen data.
The situation has caused concern among students and parents, who fear that their personal information will be used for fraudulent purposes. The school district is investigating together with law enforcement agencies and trying to assess the full extent of damage caused by the data leak.
School district officials and cybersecurity experts are urging all affected individuals to watch for signs of fraud and take precautions, such as changing passwords and monitoring bank accounts for unauthorized transactions.
At this time, the school district has not officially confirmed whether the leaked data belongs to Clark County systems, and did not specify whether a ransom was paid or other measures are being taken to prevent further leaks of information.
