Can the United States maintain its leadership in artificial intelligence?

A new player in the field of artificial intelligence from China, a startup 01.AI Led by a businessman named Kai-Fu Li, a former head of Google in China, Google has attracted global attention by launching an open language model that , according to the analysis, is almost as good as competitors, and in some respects even surpasses them.

The model, dubbed the Yi-34B, is reportedly ahead of Meta Llama-2 in key metrics, putting the company at the forefront of the competition for AI leadership between China and the United States.

Founded in June and valued at more than $1 billion, the company 01.AI it has already recruited more than 100 employees. In his interview, Lee stated his desire to offer the world an alternative to open AI standards and make better AI available to a wider audience.

Li also stressed that although China still lags behind the US in LLM technology, the country is able to create better AI applications thanks to its "phenomenal mobile Internet ecosystem."

Amid expectations of further US restrictions on China's access to chips needed for AI development, the company 01.AI I started stocking them earlier this year.

Li describes 01.AI as a response to the US restrictions, stating that China is in dire need of its AI developments due to the unavailability of products from OpenAI and Google in the country.

According to Lee, the economic and social impact of AI can lead to a concentration of wealth, increased corporate profits, and mass unemployment, which will require higher corporate taxes and income redistribution.

Lee sees a future in which the United States and China will become the dominant players in AI, and other countries will be forced to use their products in order not to miss out on potential opportunities and profits.

Whether Kai-Fu Lee's predictions come true or not, however, the need for global cooperation and regulation in the field of AI is definitely present. Such a move would ensure security and equal progress for all countries, while mitigating the potential economic and social shocks that may follow the rapid development of this area.
