China reveals the secrets of American cyberattacks.
China's state-run media outlet Global Times has warned of a pending revelation of alleged US attacks on seismic data stations.
On July 26, the publication raised the issue for the first time, reporting that the Wuhan Emergency Management Office issued a statement that some earthquake monitoring equipment had been attacked by a foreign power. This post appears to be referring to Chinese social media posts from July 25th.
The first report identified the United States as the source of the attack and quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning as saying:
“The statements from China are objective and professional. They are simply stating a fact. This is fundamentally different from the accusations and slander against China by the United States. The US government is engaged in malicious cyber operations not only against China, but also against countries around the world, accusing China of the so-called "hack attacks". It is a textbook of double standards and political manipulation."
The latest Global Times report claims that analysis of the attack revealed "very sophisticated malware with the characteristics of US intelligence agencies, highly hidden, with the aim of stealing data related to earthquake monitoring, with an obvious military intelligence purpose."
The report cited Xiao Xingguang, a member of the PRC National Committee, who is also the chief software architect of leading anti-virus company Antiy Labs: “The comprehensive vibration and sound wave data collected by these sensors, especially infrasound, has significant intelligence value for geological terrain assessment, test analysis weapons systems and nuclear tests.
China appears to be preparing its own report on US actions for public review, emphasizing the country's position that the US is a "hacker empire."
