Laval police acting on a tip from customs agents arrested a man they suspect was able produce massive quantities of counterfeit credit and debit cards from the comfort of his own basement.
The man was arrested on Jan. 29 after police searched his home in the Ste. Dorothée district and found more than 5,000 cards in various stages of production, logos from major credit card companies plus several computers and scanners.
"He could make everything from credit cards to bank cards to cheques. He had everything. You name it, he had it," said Laval police Sgt. Franco Di Genova, adding the man appeared to be very organized. "He could make a credit or debit card from start to finish."
The investigation was assigned to a regional integrated squad that targets street gangs because the man arrested is alleged to have ties to a gang.
Investigators from the squad were drawn to the man's home after agents with the Canada Border Services Agency searched a small package that had been shipped from Pakistan and destined for the suspect's address.
Dominique McNeely, a CBSA spokesperson, said a routine inspection turned up a package that contained four sheets of holograms made to look like those that appear on MasterCard and Visa credit cards. The agents assumed the holograms were counterfeit and informed the Laval police of the address they were destined for.
"Our role was in the screening of the goods coming in," McNeely said, adding that more than 6 million packages are shipped by courier across the border annually in the Montreal area alone.
Dexter Anthony Johnson, 37, appeared in Laval court on Monday, where he was charged with three counts related to credit card fraud including a charge of importing material into Canada used to make counterfeit credit cards. He was released after agreeing to a series of conditions and the case returns to court March 19.
Another set of charges filed the same day indicate that Laval police seized drugs like marijuana, magic mushrooms and methamphetamine when they searched Johnson's house on Jan. 29.
