The boss and two members of the Brooklyn-based Real Ryte gang have pleaded guilty to racketeering charges stemming from the Real Rite gang's war with the Breadgang crew of 5-9 Brims, a subset of the Bloods, including a shooting in which Real Ryte members and an accomplice wounded an innocent bystander they mistook for a member of a rival gang.
On Tuesday, October 10, 30-year-old Semaj Smith, also known as "Bam Bam" and "Real Rite Sport", a member of Real Rite, pleaded guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to conspiracy to commit racketeering and brandishing a firearm with intent to commit a violent crime. His guilty plea was preceded by statements from other defendants, 28-year-old Dajjan McBean (pictured above), also known as “Jeezy Mula", an aspiring rapper and leader of Real Ryte, and 26-year-old Real Ryte member Mark Waiters, also known as “Telly”.
Smith and Waiters each face life in prison, while McBean faces up to 20 years in prison.
"The defendants admitted that Real Ryte committed violent crimes and acts of fraud, leaving some victims destitute and others shot dead." said United States Attorney Breon Mir. "Such organized criminal groups cause serious damage to their communities, and they cannot be tolerated."
War with Breadgang crew
Between 2015 and 2018, the Real Ryte gang operated in Brooklyn. Gang members have committed acts of violence, including murder and assault, as well as engaging in bank fraud and wire transfer fraud, among other serious crimes.
During the accused period, Real Ryte was involved in a violent conflict with members of a rival gang known as “Breadgang”, whose members also operated in Brooklyn. The gang war led to a series of shootings between Real Rite and Breadgang, including the murder of Sean Peart, a member of Real Rite, a crime for which Marvin Pippins, a member of Breadgang, was convicted following a trial in the Eastern District of New York.
After Peart's death, the defendants and other members of Real Ryte tried to take revenge on Pippins and other Breadgang members. On January 3, 2017, the defendants learned that a Breadgang member could be found in lower Manhattan, and at McBean's direction, Smith, Waiters, and an accomplice went there to shoot him. However, the defendants mistakenly shot an innocent man whom they mistook for their intended target, seriously injuring the victim before fleeing.
