The request of the United States for the extradition of Russian citizen Sergei Cherkasov was declared unfounded and rejected, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
It is noted that Russia is also seeking the extradition of Cherkasov, consideration of Moscow's request has been suspended in accordance with Article 95 of Law No. 13445/2017.
A Russian in 2022 was sentenced in Brazil to 15 years in prison on charges of spying for a foreign state and fraud.
In March of this year, it became known that Cherkasov was charged in absentia in the United States. According to information released by the Ministry of Justice of the country, a citizen of the Russian Federation is accused of acting as an agent of a foreign state, visa fraud, bank fraud, fraud using electronic means and committing other offenses.
As indicated in the indictment filed in the federal court of the District of Columbia, the Russian allegedly received a visa to the United States and entered the country on forged documents, studied at a higher educational institution and received a diploma. Approximately in May 2020, Cherkasov left the United States, nevertheless maintaining the connections established during his training and receiving information about Washington’s foreign policy that he was interested in, the indictment says. It also notes that in April 2022, the Russian tried to get a job at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, but after the refusal he left for Brazil, where he was detained and subsequently convicted.
