Types of fraud with bank cards

The most common type of fraud with bank credit cards is the cloning of plastic cards or so-called dummy cards. In various ways, criminals try to find out private information of users and record data on a dummy. Next, all that remains is to cash out at an ATM or pay for purchases online.

The second no less popular method is creating online stores. Such sites are developed with one goal - to collect as much information as possible about customers’ plastic cards.

The third method is phishing. Data is obtained from users over the phone, via SMS messages or hidden cameras installed near ATMs.

New bank card fraud

One of the new types of fraud with bank cards is private advertisements with attractive discounts on the purchase of airline tickets, hotel rooms, etc. As a rule, the authors introduce themselves as relatives of people who use corporate discounts and, due to unforeseen circumstances, canceled their trip or flight.

A satisfied buyer transfers money to someone else's bank card and receives a document confirming the reservation. A check on the airline or hotel website gives a positive result.

In fact, the buyer’s money goes to the stolen card, from which payment is made. As a result, the buyer (bearer of the reservation) is detained when trying to check into a hotel or board a plane.

Fraud with bank cards by phone

Bank card fraud over the phone is the most effective way to get funds from someone else's bank card. There are two common scenarios used today. The first is a call from a bank “employee” in order to find out your card details. Banks never make such requests or invite the client to personally visit the office for this purpose. The second option is a call from the “police” with a demand to ransom a son, husband, brother or grandson who has ended up in the bullpen. You need to be especially careful with such calls. First, contact your relative by phone. As a rule, at this moment he is minding his own business and does not even suspect that he has been detained.

Fraud with bank cards: Article 159.3

Fraud with bank cards under Art. 159.3 is considered theft of funds using a stolen or counterfeit bank card. As a rule, facts of deception by employees of credit, trade or other organizations are recorded. The article also covers similar actions committed by a group of persons by prior agreement, which led to financial damage to a citizen. Theft of funds by one person or group of persons using their official position on a large and especially large scale is also considered fraud.

What to do if a person becomes a victim of a crime?

If a person has already become a victim of a crime, it is necessary to contact the banking institution’s support line as quickly as possible.

Look for the phone number on the back of the card. When talking to the operator, he will ask you to go through identification. To do this, you will need to say a code word, provide contact information, and then act in accordance with the instructions of the bank employee. To prevent further leakage of funds, the operator is obliged to block the plastic card. Try to contact a bank employee or visit a branch in person within 24 hours.

How to protect yourself from fraud?

Protecting yourself from fraud is not difficult. The first rule is to treat plastic cards with the same care and precision as cash. Keep credit and debit cards in safe places and do not leave them unattended, even for a short time. An experienced fraudster only needs a few seconds to partially or completely take possession of the available funds. It is highly undesirable to let third parties, including relatives and friends, use the card. For this category, banks issue special additional cards. If the fraudsters did withdraw money, you should immediately contact the bank with a request to block the card as a matter of urgency.
