Now the couple of criminals faces a significant prison term.

In the United States, two foreign nationals are charged with participating in a long-running conspiracy to organize so-called "swatting" against American lawmakers, individuals, religious institutions and businesses.

"Swatting" is a dangerous practice in which attackers anonymously report false information to the police about an alleged serious crime, such as hostage-taking or a bomb threat, in order to provoke a prompt visit of special services to the victim's address. This not only diverts the resources of the police from real emergencies, but also endangers the lives of people who are at the address indicated by the attackers.

According to the indictment, 26-year-old Tomas Szabo from Romania and 21-year-old Nemanja Radovanovic from Serbia were involved in criminal activities from December 2020 until January 2024. According to the prosecution, Szabó and Radovanović and their accomplices collected personal data of their victims, including home addresses, and used them to falsely report emergencies. Szabó was the organizer and moderator of groups in which conspirators exchanged information using various pseudonyms.

The prosecution alleges that the attackers carried out about 40 attacks on individuals and 61 attacks on officials, including members of the US Congress, representatives of federal agencies and executive branches. In addition, the defendants threatened to blow up four private companies, four religious institutions and one university.

Law enforcement officials stressed that "swatting" is not a harmless joke, but a serious crime that endangers people's lives and diverts police resources from real help. Employees of the US Secret Service, the FBI, the Capitol Police and other agencies took part in the case, who joined forces to catch the criminals.

Defendants Szabo and Radovanović will now stand trial on several counts, including conspiracy and making false threats. The indictment is only an allegation of guilt, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
