On the island of Bali, Indonesia, immigration authorities of the country detained 103 Taiwanese citizens suspected of organizing cybercrime activities.
Immigration officers raided the villa, where they arrested 12 women and 91 men, who were seized from a variety of mobile phones and other electronic devices. In addition to online fraud, the suspects also violated visa conditions. Those arrested will be deported from the country.
Indonesian police cannot charge those arrested because the alleged crimes are outside the country's jurisdiction and were directed against individuals in other countries. However, law enforcement officers work closely with the relevant authorities, including the Malaysian ones.
Indonesia is continuing to investigate whether the group is linked to international crime syndicates. Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said that of the 103 detainees, only 14 were Taiwanese citizens. The investigation continues.
It is unclear whether the suspects committed the alleged cybercrimes against their will — so-called cyber-slavery has become a common problem across Southeast Asia, where educated and computer-savvy young people seeking high-paying jobs are eventually forced to engage in cyber-fraud.
