The report shows that 2.6 billion personal data records have been leaked over the past 2 years.

A study conducted by MIT professor Dr. Stuart Madnick, commissioned by Apple, found an increase in the number of leaks at the global level. It turned out that from 2013 to 2022, the number of such incidents tripled. As a result, about 2.6 billion personal data records have been compromised over the past two years.

The trend continued in 2023. Last year's report by researchers highlights that security threats that have reached historically high levels continue to increase. In response to these challenges, tech companies are taking proactive steps by implementing end-to-end encryption technologies, as Apple did with the launch of Improved Data Protection for iCloud last year.

The feature provides maximum security, offering users additional protection for sensitive information even in the event of a leak. iCloud already protects 14 categories of sensitive data, including iCloud Keychain passwords and medical information. When Enhanced Protection is activated, the number of protected categories increases to 23. This list includes iCloud backups, notes, photos, and more.

Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, says that the company is ready to deal with threats and will continue to develop its tools. The report also notes that digitalization contributed to the increase in the number of leaks. Every year, thousands of incidents expose the personal data of hundreds of millions of consumers.

Hackers are improving their methods, finding new ways to bypass previously effective security tools. As a result, even organizations with the most advanced security systems are vulnerable to threats that seemed insignificant a few years ago. The report also shows that even users who follow all security measures can suffer if organizations that they trust with their data store it in clear text.

When hackers try to break into a company's systems with a high level of security, they often start by attacking its more vulnerable partners. Then they steal credentials or collect information that helps attack employees and networks of the main target.

In the announcement of the study on its official website, Apple calls its products among the safest on the market. The authors cite as an example another important feature — Lock Mode, which protects against extreme threats such as spyware intrusion.

In the US alone, 20% more leaks were recorded in the first nine months of 2023 than in the whole of 2022. In particular, experts are concerned about the growing number of ransomware attacks.
