The West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) said they received several reports of SNAP benefits being stolen. The WOWK TV channel clarifies that officials consider skimming, phishing and plastic cloning to be the main tools of fraudsters.
"Any American using a credit, debit or EBT card can be skimmed, including SNAP members," said Janie Cole, DHHR commissioner at the Family Assistance Bureau. “Victims of scammers who specialize in stealing benefits are people with low incomes, and this is unacceptable.”
At the same time, the state has a program that allows you to reimburse stolen benefits. The amount of compensation cannot exceed the amount of money lost as a result of fraudulent actions of third parties. Officials also reminded the scammers themselves that stealing benefits can lead to jail time and fines, as it is punishable by both federal and state law. However, if the person who stole benefits is themselves a benefit recipient, they will lose all of their SNAP benefits.
