The use of the unified information system was a fatal mistake of the administrators.
In Romania, at least 18 hospitals faced serious operational problems due to a large-scale ransomware attack that knocked out the local health management system.
The Hipocrate Information System (HIS), used by hospitals in Romania to manage medical activities and patient data, was attacked over the weekend. As a result, the system's database was encrypted, making HIS unavailable.
The Romanian Ministry of Health reported the incident on the night of February 11-12. As a result of the attack on the production servers on which the HIS information system was running, the system completely failed, and files and databases were encrypted.
The incident is under investigation by IT specialists, including experts from the National Directorate for Cybersecurity of Romania (DNSC). Currently, we are evaluating the possibility of restoring the system, when as a precaution for other hospitals that were not affected by the attack, they have already been taken.
The attack affected many hospitals across Romania, including regional and cancer centers. Cybersecurity experts from DNSC are currently investigating the incident and recommend temporarily not disturbing the IT teams of affected hospitals so that they can focus on restoring services and data.
At the time of publication of this news, there was no information about which specific hacker group was responsible for the attack, as well as whether personal or medical data of patients was stolen.
RSC, a provider of software for the Hipocrate medical system, has not yet issued a public statement about the cyberattack.
