SecurityScorecard found out who was most affected and what major incidents are related to.

Almost half of all cyber incidents in 2023, according to a new study by SecurityScorecard, were organized by just ten groups of attackers. The experts report contains data on the countries where threats most often originate, the most vulnerable industries, as well as on the relationship between exposure to cyber attacks and the economic situation of the state.

One of the identified trends was an attack on supply chains, which puts many organizations at risk. It turned out that 98% of companies use compromised third-party software.

Among the ten most active hacker groups are ART28, which attacked the infrastructure of Ukraine, and Cobalt Group, which has been hacking financial institutions since 2016. The main infrastructure they used last year was in China (24%) and Russia (15%).

Most often, IT and technology companies were attacked, as well as critical areas such as telecommunications and the public sector. According to analysts, companies in the most vulnerable industries need to join forces to effectively manage cyber risks.

In addition, a strong correlation was found between countries GDP and their security in the digital environment, as economic prosperity is closely linked to the ability to navigate a complex threat landscape.

Northern Europe received the highest cybersecurity score — 82.97, and Central Asia — the lowest-71.73.

Alexander Yampolsky, CEO of SecurityScorecard, commented on the report as follows: "Progress begins with accurate analysis. And until recently, the field of cybersecurity lacked effective measurement methods... Security ratings provide global leaders with a universal language to relentlessly manage cyber risks based on concrete data."

He added: "By setting clear KPIs, we can increase cyber resilience and ultimately restore confidence in our digital ecosystem."
