In Hong Kong, 27 people were detained on suspicion of organizing fraudulent schemes using deepfakes. With the help of face substitution, fraudsters lured funds from victims, the total damage amounted to $46 million.
The syndicate was located in a residential area of 371.6 m2. During the operation, six university graduates were detained, who are suspected of creating fictitious trading platforms to attract investors to cryptocurrency projects.
The attackers first contacted the victims through social media, using AI-generated photos to create eye-catching images that matched their appearance, profession, and education. In the case of requests for video calls, the scammers used deepfake to imitate female images and voices, causing complete trust among victims.
During the search at the headquarters of the criminal group, computers, mobile phones, elite watches and about $ 25,750 allegedly related to fraudulent activities were seized. The victims are in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, India and Singapore. The five detainees may be linked to the major criminal organization Sun Yee On, one of the well-known triads of Hong Kong and China.
