A group of hackers, CC Buddies, has released a device that can instantly copy credit cards with RFID chips from a distance of 15 cm. The device is very convenient to use, easy to hide and difficult to find. Note that the sale began not on the Daknet, as before, but on the very usual Internet.

Note the high performance of the CC Buddies device for contactless reading and cloning of credit cards with RFID chips: up to 21 credit cards per second. Last year's model Infusion X5 allowed cloning up to 15 cards per second, but from a closer distance from the card - no more than 8 cm. The new X6 model is twice as "long range".

Of course, close contact with the potential victim is still required, but this is not at all difficult to ensure, especially on transport during rush hour, in line in a public place, etc. Even 8 cm was a sufficient distance, and now it's even easier to do. The device has a fastener on the arm, which allows you to safely hide it under the long sleeve: just wave your hand next to the target, and that's it - the clone is ready. Even if the most awkward thief in the world wants to use it, it will not be easy to prove the theft - the X6 has means of encrypting the stored data. Stolen map data is stored in the device's memory, accessible via a USB cable.

Bank card data is sold in the cybercrime market as hot as hot cakes. They are used to make fake debit cards. The X6 is offered for 1.5 bitcoins, which is roughly $ 1,700 at current exchange rates.
Can you protect yourself? I guess, yes. Judging by the technical descriptions of the predecessor, the new version also operates at 13.5 MHz, which is a short wave. More precisely, it should be 13.56 MHz - the radio frequency at which payment terminals operate using NFC technology (a type of RFID).

And the stated copying distance of 15 cm most likely refers to an environment without obstacles - (clothes, wallet, etc.), so the main thing is to avoid direct contact of the device with the card. Also, the security of such cards is highly dependent on the security standards of their manufacturers.

What else can you do? You can refuse such cards in favor of ordinary plastic. You can wrap them in foil as a kinder surprise (the main thing is to learn how to unfold them in front of the cashier with a serene look). From more technological solutions, you can recommend wallets with shielded pockets, or special shielded cases for carrying cards - there are some. This is not very convenient, especially if there are a lot of cards, but it will definitely dampen paranoia.

Of course, even if you steal all the information, including the card's expiration date, there will still be the card's CVV code, which is required, for example, for online payments. But the fact is that many online stores still neglect this security measure. This is where your money can be at risk. There are other scenarios in which the stolen card data can harm you. So a shielded wallet is more reliable.
