Modern biometric identification systems guarantee an accuracy of over 99.9% in facial analysis, which prevents them from being fooled by masks, similar people, or even twins.
At the same time, criminals continue to improve their methods of bypassing biometrics, which leads to a “battle of developments” between fraudsters and software developers, Leonid Syrov, Director of Regional Development at VisionLabs, told RAPSI’s Open Studio.
“In the circles of those involved in biometrics, anything below 99% accuracy is considered a rather weak result. Yes, we are talking about the fact that we give our technology an accuracy of 99.9% and further five decimal places. In this case, the story with the twins makes the probability of deception extremely small. Such tests allow us to understand the quality of biometric solutions,” Syrov noted.
The expert believes that the maximum reliability of biometric solutions is now used in the field of finance and banking. People’s mistrust of mathematical models and the work of biometrics is debunked by practice.
"A lot of processes are tied to verifying the identification of a passport and a person, when we bring a passport to a border checkpoint - they look at us from a photograph. This is extremely low accuracy, because we are all constantly changing: physiology, hairstyles, weight, and so on. With the help of a computer, a mathematical model copes more effectively than a person," the expert said.
He believes that fraudsters and biometric software developers are in a constant war of "black and white." At the same time, the risks are not as great as they seem, and it is becoming more difficult to fake a face every year.
