Who organized the attack and why did they target government portals?

Cyprus has successfully repelled a cyberattack on a government portal aimed at blocking access to the state's online services. The incident was part of a series of attacks targeting the country's public and private companies over the course of three days.

The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus reported that the prompt and coordinated work of specialists helped prevent the attack. The main goal of the attackers was to block access to a number of government websites.

As a result of the DDoS attack, access to the gov.cy portal was disrupted for several minutes, but the rest of the websites of ministries and departments remained inaccessible to attackers and continued to operate normally. The department did not disclose who was behind the attacks and what motives could have led them.

This incident occurred against the backdrop of other attacks recorded the day before in Cyprus. So, at the end of last week, hackers tried to disrupt the work of electrical and telecommunications services, as well as the airport operator Hermes and the fuel company EKO Cyprus Ltd.

According to the Cypriot authorities, all attempts were unsuccessful, there were no leaks of customer data, and the systems continued to function without interruption.
