An attacker who built shimmers into ATMs and stole payment card details was detained in Minsk, the official Telegram channel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports. The story begins in July, when cybercrime operatives seized a shimmer device from an ATM — a device that reads data from the chip and magnetic stripe of a bank card. Now it has been continued.
Operatives of the department "K" of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus identified the suspect and red-handed detained him. It turned out that the man built shimmers into ATMs in the morning, and in the evening he took them away. During the day, the device copied the bank card details of users, and pin codes were recorded on video by the installed video camera-overlay. The man copied the received data with an encoder to blank plastic cards, and then used "clones" to withdraw money from accounts.
Carder worked in various districts of Minsk, conducted "reconnaissance", changed the geography of movement. He also used different clothes, masks, and wigs for conspiracy.
During the search at the place of residence of the man, special equipment was seized, with the help of which he committed atrocities, as well as means of disguise and related devices.
Now a criminal case has been opened for embezzlement by using computer equipment, committed on a large scale. Further investigation is underway.
The Department for solving crimes in the field of high technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that crimes such as carding are losing relevance for Belarus, and criminals are more actively moving into the virtual space. It is noted that most of these crimes on the territory of Belarus are committed by "guest performers" from neighboring countries. Almost all of them are disclosed either at the stage of preparation, or at the time of their commission.
Experts recommend giving preference to ATMs built into the premises, enabling the SMS notification service about spending operations on the card account, and immediately notifying banking institutions when the card is withdrawn by an ATM or in other unforeseen situations.
