American authorities accused businessman Ilya Kan, who lives in the United States, of exporting microelectronics to Russia despite sanctions.

“Ilya Kan, 66 years old, a citizen of the United States, Israel and Russia, a resident of Brooklyn (New York) and Los Angeles (California), was arrested yesterday in Los Angeles on suspicion of participating in a multi-year scheme to illegally export sensitive technologies for the benefit of Russian business under restrictions,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement.

According to court documents, the businessman is charged with conspiracy to violate the Export Administration Reform Act (ECRA).

The detainee allegedly used a network of enterprises in China and other countries to illegally transfer hundreds of thousands of semiconductors to sanctioned enterprises associated with the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation.

According to U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Breon Peace, Kahn, who is the owner of Senesys Incorporated and Sensor Design Association, carried out his activities “in circumvention of U.S. export laws and regulations.”

If convicted, Kahn could face up to 20 years in prison.
