Representatives of the Financial Monitoring Agency of Kazakhstan (AFM) said that since the beginning of the year, the agency has blocked the work of 980 illegal cryptocurrency exchangers.

During a workshop on financial technologies and virtual asset turnover held in Sanya, China, representatives from various countries spoke about the practices of countering the use of virtual assets for criminal purposes and their results.

Participants emphasized that the decentralization of digital assets and the anonymity of their owners makes cryptocurrencies attractive in the criminal environment, which creates new challenges for financial and law enforcement systems.

According to the head of the AFM department Ruslan Ostroumov, the agency blocked 980 cryptocurrency exchangers. 9 cases of illegal exchange operations worth $36.7 million and money laundering are also being investigated.

It should be noted that Kazakhstan has the opportunity to legally work with cryptocurrencies ― as part of the AIFC pilot project. To do this, crypto companies need to obtain a special license, and banks need to apply to join the project.

Recently, the local licensed crypto exchange ATAIX asked Russian users to close their accounts by December 15 this year.
