Before Bitcoin became famous, people believed that Bitcoin was anonymous. But since everything is recorded on a global, shared ledger (blockchain), it's not actually anonymous at all!

Know that if you leave a digital footprint (for example, buy Bitcoin using an ID), then de-anonymizing your transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain is just a matter of time and resources.

This is why more and more people are finding ways to increase their anonymity when interacting with the Bitcoin network. Many people want to know how they can get bitcoins without using an ID.

To support such demands, some companies offer anonymous buying/selling of Bitcoins. Additionally, there are certain techniques and tips that you should follow to remain anonymous.

Therefore, to cater to the needs of such users, today I will share some of the best ways to buy Bitcoin without ID.

However, remember that there is no free lunch, and additional anonymity comes at a cost. These methods are 5-10% more expensive than other traditional methods of buying Bitcoin.

So let's get started!

Top 7 ways to buy Bitcoin without documents and anonymously

1. Exchange Rango

Rango is a multi-chain DEX aggregator and a haven for those who want to buy BTC without KYC. This is perhaps the best way to get BTC, ETH and any other crypto projects without KYC. You can buy BTC using USDT, or any other stablecoin or cryptocurrency of your choice.

Rango exchange uses Thorchain liquidity to withdraw BTC for you without KYC. The process is not very simple for a beginner and is suggested for users who have little experience with cryptocurrencies and especially with Defi.

2. CEX (requires ID in 2023)

CEX.io is a US-registered exchange that allows users to buy $100 worth of cryptocurrency per day without having to present any documents. This also applies when purchasing using a credit/debit card.

Update: CEX requires ID to purchase cryptocurrency of any size.
  • Supported currencies: USD, EUR, RUB, GBP, USDT, BTC, GUSD, OMG, ONT, ONG, USDT, ADA, USDC, NEO, GAS, BAT, ATOM, XTZ, MATIC, LINK, WABI
  • Supported payment methods: Credit cards, debit cards, SEPA, ACH, FasterPayments, Skrill, Qiwi

3. Buying from person to person

This is perhaps one of the most underused tricks to buy Bitcoin without an ID. As Bitcoin becomes more widespread, you may come across many people who own Bitcoin and you can ask them to sell you Bitcoin directly. You will be surprised to find that many of them may be willing to sell you Bitcoin at the exchange price or even below the market price, as they will save on taxes. You should also check out some of these p2p exchanges for more options.

Make sure you use one of the best Bitcoin wallets to receive funds.

4. Bitcoin ATMs

Bitcoin ATMs

Bitcoin ATMs are not very common. But this is still one of the best ways to buy Bitcoin without ID. Some BTC ATMs do not require you to reveal your identity and do not require facial or fingerprint identification.

You can simply buy Bitcoins from these ATMs in exchange for fiat currency.

The Bitcoin ATM asks you to scan your public address and transfers the BTC to that address in the fiat equivalent you deposited into it. In some cases, if you don't have a public address, simply select the "no address" option and the ATM will generate a paper wallet for you (if it supports this feature).

Check here if there is a Bitcoin ATM in your country.

5. Bitsquare (aka BISQ)

Bitsquare

Bitsquare is a peer-to-peer marketplace for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. It is a completely decentralized exchange that does not require any name, email ID or verification.

To be a truly anonymous peer-to-peer network, it uses Tor and does not store fiat or bitcoin on its servers or in its account. Every aspect of this exchange is decentralized - from order placement, order selection, to execution.

It currently supports 126 cryptocurrencies (including BTC) and is available on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms, but trading volumes are low.

How Bitsqaure works is beyond the scope of this article. But in the future, CoinSutra is going to cover all the important aspects of Bitsquare...

Note: Bitsquare was recently rebranded to Bisq due to copyright issues.

Here's an introduction video from Bitsquare:

6. Wall of coins

Wall of coins

Wall of Coins is also one of the best ways to get Bitcoins without revealing your identity.

It is a predominantly cash system where the buyer has to go and deposit cash into the bank.

A Bitcoin seller who has a bank branch near you will provide you with their bank account details. You can then visit your nearest bank branch and deposit cash. Once they confirm the deposit, the coins in escrow will be released to you.

As with LBC, rates are set by individual sellers.

Currently, Wall of Coins operates in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Latvia, Poland and the Philippines.

7. Exchange Changelly

ShapeShift or Changelly Exchange

Another popular way to buy bitcoins is through ShapeShift or Changelly.

Both of them do not require identity verification.

However, Changelly requires you to register with an email ID, but you can use an alias. ShapeShift does not require an email. Personally, I use Changelly because of their competitive exchange rates and viewable transaction history for tracking.

But this method requires you to have supporting altcoins such as LTC/ETH/DASH/etc. to exchange for BTC. If you have altcoins, then you can buy bitcoins in seconds without verification.

Conclusion: Buy Bitcoin Anonymously

All of the methods described above do not require identity verification to buy bitcoins, but even using more complex methods can still lead to you being tracked. Sometimes you can be identified by your IP address or through the private wi-fi you use.

Or you might accidentally reveal your public Bitcoin address on the Internet. Or the seller can track you using your mobile or car number when you transacted with them face to face in fiat/bitcoin.

In the near future, we are preparing to share several more proven ways to work anonymously with Bitcoin. So stay tuned for the latest tips and tricks!

If you know of some more anonymous ways to buy/sell Bitcoin, I'd love to hear them in the comments section below.
