Tinkoff is back in the spotlight.

Tinkoff Bank has requested its customers consent to process photos that were taken during the registration of banking products in order to convert them to biometric data format. Currently, the bank has about 30 million customers, and their biometric data can significantly replenish the Unified Biometric System.

Tinkoff Bank has published information about collecting customer consent for photo processing in Stories of its mobile app. In the request, the bank notifies customers that it will post data in the EBS, explaining that this will help to quickly confirm transactions and protect customers from fraudsters.

Some customers were surprised and didn't understand how to issue a data opt-out. The consent text indicates that you can revoke your consent by email or through a personal request, including remote service services.

The photos that the bank plans to process were taken by couriers when delivering groceries. This can be a photo with a sealed envelope or a passport photo.

According to the bank, as of mid-2023, it has more than 30 million retail customers. Some experts believe that obtaining consent after the fact may be illegal.

The Bank is provided with two possible options: either to get the clients ' permission to transfer data to the EBS, or to completely erase the information from their systems. Now the storage of biometric data is allowed exclusively in the EBS, while data collection for commercial systems is prohibited.
