In the early 2000s, the Japanese noticed some of the limitations associated with the traditional barcode. And they began to look for a worthy alternative that could accommodate more information and did not take up much space on printed materials. This is how the QR code was born - a two-dimensional barcode that can be easily scanned by modern gadgets.
Today the QR code is widely used in the printing of plastic cards. And this is understandable, because there are more than enough arguments in favor of this optical mark. We will talk about them further.
Convenient data storage
A QR code is a modern encoding method capable of storing more information. It can accommodate 7089 numbers, 4296 Latin letters, 2953 bytes of information or 1817 hieroglyphs. Most often, a two-dimensional barcode contains information about contacts (phone number, email address); links to the company's website, social media or Youtube channel; call to action (download the application to your phone, connect to the wireless Internet, make a phone call).
Types of QR codes in print
The printing industry separates fixed and variable QR codes. The first option involves applying the same code for the entire circulation. In the second case, unique information is applied to each card. A permanent QR code is easier to use, and it is cheaper to print a single tag. Often, static data is encrypted in a permanent QR code: links to a website, Facebook, Instagram companies, links to download applications for iOS or Android operating systems. The variable QR code makes each plastic card unique. Information encrypted on printed materials can be used for holding promotions (a unique code for a discount), for automatic registration of a client in a database or personal account.
Ease of scanning
The classic barcode lends itself to scanning with a thin beam. Therefore, special equipment is required to decode it. The QR code is easily recognized by any scanning device, up to a smartphone. Thanks to this, the QR code can be used in any service sector - from trade to logistics.
