A scammer from Amersfoort scammed dozens of people through a trading platform.
On Tuesday, September 10, a 19-year-old man was detained in the city of Amersfoort on suspicion of participating in a phishing scam. Previously, he had already been prosecuted three times for similar crimes.
The police launched an investigation after receiving a statement from one of the banks, which reported a series of phishing attacks on its customers. The scammers used a method known as the "1 cent scam," which involves an attacker, posing as a buyer on a second-hand platform, asking sellers to click on a link to confirm a 1 cent transaction. In fact, this link led to a phishing site where unsuspecting sellers entered their banking details, allowing the scammer to gain access to their accounts.
With the help of this scheme, the attacker tried to steal almost 100,000 euros from various accounts. Fortunately, most suspicious transactions were blocked by the bank before they were completed.
During the investigation, the police managed to get on the trail of the suspect by analyzing digital traces. During the detention, a search was carried out at his place of residence, where several media were seized. The investigation is ongoing and the police continue to collect additional evidence.
