A division of the largest international organization proudly refuses to pay the ransom.

Last month, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) was targeted by a ransomware attack. One of the representatives said that the local UNDP server complex came under attack, as a result of which confidential data was stolen.

"The stolen files included personal data of current and former UNDP employees, as well as procurement information related to individual suppliers and contractors," he said. The organization has already notified the affected individuals and companies whose data it has, and will continue to notify all affected individuals as the investigation progresses.

"At the moment, we do not know whether the stolen data was used," the UNDP representative assured. He also said that the organization did not enter into negotiations with criminals and "did not pay and will not pay any ransoms."

Two weeks ago, the 8Base group said that it had hacked the UNDP systems, threatening to publish the data. On April 3, the company's confidential files were still online.

UNDP implements projects focused on addressing the problems of poverty and social inequality in 170 countries around the world. The organization issued a public report on the incident, which states that " the local IT infrastructure of the UN complex in Copenhagen was attacked."

In recent years, a number of international humanitarian organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and Amnesty International, have also been targeted by hackers allegedly linked to government agencies, particularly in China. The Norwegian Refugee Council, Save the Children International, and several other agencies have also experienced ransomware attacks.

The International Organization for Migration, which has observer status at the UN and cooperates with several agencies, also fell victim to the extortion ring in 2022.

8Base, which claimed responsibility for the attack on UNDP, is a relatively new player in this market, but, according to experts, its participants have considerable experience. Although the VMware report for 2023 attributed this group to other extortionate operations, some experts believe that the criminals only borrowed other people's extortionate texts and web design. Recently, 8Base also claimed responsibility for a cyber attack on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
