The scale of the leak is staggering: what to do if you become a victim.
Since the beginning of 2024, Roskomnadzor has recorded 19 cases of personal data leaks, as a result of which more than 510 million records about Russians have entered the network. One particular incident stands out, as a result of which 500 million users data was leaked, said Milos Wagner, deputy head of Roskomnadzor. This case is currently under investigation. For comparison, in 2023, about 300 million leaked records were registered, and in 2022, after the start of a special military operation, 600 million.
In December of the previous year, two bills were submitted to the State Duma aimed at toughening responsibility for data leaks. It is proposed to introduce revolving fines, the amount of which will depend on the company's income, and the maximum penalty can reach 500 million rubles. In addition, the possibility of introducing criminal liability for such violations up to four years in prison is being considered.
An interesting point is that during the holiday period of January 2024, 116.5 million rows of data were leaked, of which 115.2 million belonged to the financial sector. The total amount of data leaked during this period was 5 terabytes, which is 10% more compared to the previous year. At the same time, Russian banks opposed the introduction of turnover fines of up to 500 million rubles, proposing to limit fines to 30 million rubles and cancel repeated fines for leaks .
The situation with data leaks in Russia remains tense, which is confirmed not only by the number of leaks, but also by the scale of compromised data. The authorities are taking steps to tighten the responsibility for violations in the field of personal data processing, which should help to improve the situation in this area.
