Is there a complete VPN blackout in Russia?

Recently, residents of the southern regions of Russia have encountered problems accessing VPN services, including those based on the Shadowsocks proxy protocol. This protocol allows you to bypass the blockages set by Internet service providers. It is also noted that the Outline service, a popular solution for creating your own VPN servers based on Shadowsocks, also does not work. In addition, the Telegram service has been experiencing access problems in these regions for the past 24 hours.

Shadowsocks was created in 2012 by a Chinese developer known under the pseudonym clowwindy, in response to increased censorship in China. Unlike standard VPN protocols, it does not form an encrypted tunnel between the client and server, but provides encryption and obfuscation of traffic, making it less visible to blocking systems, such as the Great Firewall of China.

The Shadowsocks protocol pretends to be garbage in traffic and cannot be detected by signature methods. Therefore, along with Telegram and VPN, many other services were blocked - online games, video calls, and various streaming data.

In the light of recent events, experts express concerns about the possible spread of blocking VPN services based on the Shadowsocks protocol throughout Russia. If this development is confirmed, it may affect many users who are used to using this protocol to bypass blockages and sanctions restrictions.
