You can pay for goods not only with a smartphone.
It is difficult to ignore the impact of innovation on our daily life. It is enough to take a closer look at how we pay for purchases in the supermarket. There is no longer any need to count banknotes and coins, check them for authenticity, and deduct change. With the help of gadgets, you can pay within a few seconds, without even taking out your wallet.

Mobile payments are made possible by the NFC (Near Field Communication) function , which enables wireless communication between two electronic devices that are close to each other. The system allows you to complete a transaction by simply bringing the gadget to the reader, which picks up the radio frequency on which the chip transmits data. The device sends information to the acquiring center, which skips or cancels the transaction. PayWave (Visa) and PayPass (Mastercard) methods are used to make payments. Let's take a closer look at how, apart from cash and a bank card, you can pay in the XXI century.

Smartphone

Most modern smartphones support the contactless payment function. Every iPhone since the iPhone 6 has NFC. For a long time, Apple limited devices equipped with a module. However, the latest batch of iPhones, including the iPhone 12 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max and 12 Mini, support NFC through the Launch Center Pro program.

NFC has also been added to the iPad lineup starting with the iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini third generation, but these devices won't work with in-store proximity readers.

They can replace a credit card and devices running Android 4.0 and later. However, in some places the Android feature needs to be activated. So, to start paying with Google Pay, you need to take a few steps on your Android phone:
  • open settings;
  • find "Wireless networks";
  • select NFC and activate permission to use it;
  • link your bank card to your Google Pay account.
Gadgets on iOS already have the appropriate settings, so to pay with them, it is enough to tie a card. To make a payment, it is enough to place the smartphone at a distance of 4 cm from the reader, then a digital wallet and a request for confirmation of payment will appear.

Watch

Not all smartwatches with NFC pay.
Most manufacturers of smart watches with NFC work with their own payment system: Apple - with Apple Pay; Garmin - with Garmin Pay Huawei - with Huawei Pay; FitBit - with FitBit Pay; Samsung - with Samsung Pay; Wear OS watches - with Google Pay; Xiaomi, Xiaomi and some other manufacturers from China - with Mi Pay or Ali Pay.

To calculate in a supermarket, you need to open an application on a gadget, bring it to the terminal and wait for a beep or vibration. For a debit card, the device may ask for a bank PIN. To add a map, for example, on a Garmin watch, you need to download the Garmin Connect software to your smartphone, select the Garmin watch in the application. Next, you should enter the payment card details and the code from the SMS, which will be sent to the number to which you registered the bank card. The card will then appear in the wallet on the watch.

Keep in mind that not all smartwatches with NFC allow contactless payments. Therefore, it is worth clarifying which payment system the watch supports, whether it exists in your country and whether your bank cooperates with it.

Fitness bracelet

Fitness bracelets can not only track sleep quality or monitor physical activity. They allow contactless payment if equipped with the appropriate module. For example, the Mi Smart Band 4 NFC bracelet, developed by Xiaomi and Mastercard, has such a chip. To activate the function, you need to install the Mi Fit mobile application, activate the Mi Fit account with Ukraine. Next, in the "Devices" attachment, select "Fitness bracelet Mi Smart Band 4 NFC", and in the "Bank card" tab, enter the required card details and confirm authorization using SMS.

However, the presence of NFC in a fitness bracelet, again, does not guarantee payment support. For contactless payment in our country, only bracelets with a product code starting with MGW4059RU are suitable.

Ring

A smart ring can also count steps, heartbeats, notify about incoming calls, e-mails, and pay for travel or goods. Several years ago, Oschadbank together with Visa presented a ceramic ring with an NFC chip. Its manufacturers assure: personal data is under reliable protection thanks to the built-in electronic key. The ring is issued as an additional card to a bank account.
