The escalation of the conflict in Israel is turning into a real cyber war.

A group of hackers from Gaza is associated with a series of cyber attacks targeting Israeli private organizations in the energy, defense and telecommunications sectors. Details of the activity were revealed by Microsoft in the annual Digital Defense Report, where the campaign is tracked under the name Storm-1133.

The assessment shows that this group promotes the interests of the Hamas group, since most of the activity is directed against organizations perceived as hostile to Hamas. The campaign targeted organizations in Israel's energy and defense sectors, as well as targets loyal to Fatah, a Palestinian political party headquartered in the West Bank.

The attack chains involve a combination of social engineering and fake LinkedIn profiles posing as Israeli HR managers, project coordinators, and software developers to send phishing messages, conduct intelligence, and deliver malware to employees of Israeli organizations.

Microsoft also noted attempts by Storm-1133 to break into the systems of third-party organizations that have public links to objects of interest in Israel. Intrusions are designed to deploy backdoors, as well as configurations that allow the group to dynamically update the Management and Control Infrastructure (C2) hosted on Google Drive. This technique allows operators to stay ahead of some static network protection tools.
