The story of the 26-year-old kidnapper of mental injuries of Finns has ended.

26-year-old hacker Julius Aleksanteri Kivimyaki was sentenced to 6 years in prison. This was reported by local media, referring to the court's decision in the case of hacking a private psychotherapy center Vastaamo in Helsinki.

The court found Kiwimaki guilty of more than 9,200 counts of spreading information that infringes on people's privacy, more than 20,000 counts of attempted blackmail, and 20 counts of extortion. In addition, Kiwimaki will face more than 5,000 claims for damages.

According to Finnish police, about 22,000 victims reported extortion attempts of up to €500 each. Initially, Kiwimaki demanded 40 BTC from Vastaamo, but the company was reluctant to make contact, so he tried to enter from the other side. The hacker began sending emails to clients demanding different amounts, from €200 to €500 euros, and promising in return not to disclose the details of their sessions with psychologists.

The attack on Vastaamo began in 2018. As a result, not only sensitive data of about 33,000 patients was stolen, but also financial information that the attacker used for fraud. After the institution refused to meet the hacker's demands, the data of some patients was posted on the darknet.

Some media outlets noted that the Vastaamo hack and extortion of patients "deeply shocked Finnish society", and called the attack "a watershed event for Finland".

During the investigation, the police were able to trace cryptocurrency transactions and eventually reach out to Kiwimaki, despite the criminal's attempts to convert funds into the Monero cryptocurrency, which until this case was considered completely anonymous and untraceable.

At the end of October 2022, Kivimaki was charged (he was also arrested in absentia, as he was in France) with attempting to extort money from the Vastaamo psychotherapy center. On October 21, 2020, the Vastaamo clinic became the target of blackmail when an attacker demanded to pay 40 bitcoins in exchange for a promise not to publish confidential recordings of therapeutic sessions.

For his activities, Julius Alexanteri Kivimyaki, who at the age of 17 was accused of more than 50,000 cybercrimes, was included in the list of Interpol's most wanted criminals in 2022, and in February 2023 he was arrested in France.
