Japanese authorities warn companies that their employees may be hiding something.

Japanese authorities have warned companies about North Korean IT professionals posing as Japanese to earn money to finance Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.

"According to available information, there are suspicions that North Korean IT workers disguised as Japanese citizens are using online platforms provided by Japanese companies to obtain contracts and earn money," the National Police Department of Japan said in a press release.

In addition, the country's authorities are concerned about the possible "participation of North Korean IT specialists in malicious cyber activities, such as data theft."

It is not surprising that North Korea sends its technical personnel abroad to receive funds, given that the regime in Pyongyang is effectively cut off from international financial flows.

"North Korea is sending thousands of highly skilled IT workers around the world to generate revenue to fund its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, in violation of U.S. and UN sanctions," the 2022 advisory document from the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Treasury Department, and the FBI notes.

Last year, the FBI seized 17 websites used by highly qualified North Korean specialists to conceal their identity for the purpose of employment in American companies.

According to the Japan Times, on March 6, the president of a Japanese IT company was arrested, and the police are investigating whether he hired a North Korean citizen.
