Why does an afrobeat musician face 20 years in prison?

A British citizen, Idris Dayo Mustafa, pleaded guilty to hacking emails, brokerage accounts and stealing more than $ 6 million. The decision was announced on Tuesday in the Eastern District Court of New York. He faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of computer hacking, stock market fraud, electronic payment fraud and illegal use of personal data.

According to the case file, in the period from 2011 to 2018, Mustafa and his unidentified accomplices illegally accessed bank accounts using phishing attacks and hacking the servers of American financial institutions. They studied the owners ' confidential data and placed malicious files in the systems.

Initially, the attackers initiated money transfers from the accounts on behalf of their owners. They also stole securities through the victims brokerage accounts. However, when financial companies blocked suspicious transactions, Mustafa's team had to change the course of action.

So, on May 17, 2016, Mustafa initiated, on behalf of one of the victims, the purchase of shares in a certain public company at an increasing price. And then he sold shares of the same company from his brokerage account, making a total profit of $ 68,000. The victim herself suffered losses in the amount of about $ 289,000.

The perpetrators also set up romantic online dating activities on behalf of the fictional personalities "Melanie Saunders"and" Tracy Ben." The victims were people who were looking for a soulmate on the Web.

After gaining favor, the criminals convinced their "partners" to open bank and brokerage accounts, ostensibly for sharing. They were then asked to deposit checks and transfer money on their behalf.

At the same time, Mustafa was engaged in music as part of the afrobeat group Built to Win Baller's Club under the pseudonym Drizzle Lomo. He was educated in Information technology at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.
