Group-IB has discovered another campaign that plays on the feelings of believers.

During Ramadan, experts from Group-IB discovered a large-scale fraud campaign aimed at Muslims. The attackers created 375 fake web pages offering 60 GB of free high-speed 5G Internet from various providers.

Notably, most of these sites used unique domain names like .top, .shop, and .xyz that were not previously applied. This indicates a thorough preparation of scammers specifically for the holy holiday.

Scammers used social engineering techniques to make their offers seem legitimate. Themed images and comments from satisfied gift recipients were posted on the sites, encouraging them to share the link in WhatsApp with their friends as soon as possible.

First, the victims were taken to a page with various questionnaires, where they had to leave their data in order to get the promised free Internet. Then they were redirected to sites related to investment fraud, and various tricks forced to make a cash deposit.

According to Group-IB experts, this scheme is similar to previous campaigns that use questionnaires, but differs in that mobile Internet traffic is offered instead of monetary rewards. Thus, criminals seem to show the victim that the offer is urgent and unique, counting on her credulity. After all, it's easy to fall for fraudulent tricks if you don't have time to think.

"They skillfully use cultural symbols and social engineering techniques to play on users' trust and create a sense of urgency, drawing them into a web of deception," warned Vladimir Kalugin, Director of Digital Threat Protection at Group-IB.
