The best anonymous email services.
Most free email services are fine for regular use, but if you want to be more confident that messages you send and receive are secure, check out the email services below. These services provide email privacy, security, and encryption.

ProtonMail

ProtonMail-1024x702.jpg

ProtonMail is a free, open source encrypted email provider based in Switzerland. It works from any computer via the ProtonMail website as well as Android and iOS mobile apps.

No one can decrypt ProtonMail messages without your unique password - not even ProtonMail employees, their ISPs, your ISP, or the government.

ProtonMail is so secure that it cannot recover your emails if you forget your password. Decryption occurs when you log in, which means the service has no means of decrypting emails without your password or file recovery account.

ProtonMail also does not store your IP address information. With a no-registration email service such as ProtonMail, emails cannot be traced back to you.

The free version of ProtonMail supports 500MB of email storage and limits usage to 150 messages per day.

Purchase the Plus or Visionary service to get more email storage, email aliases, priority support, shortcuts, custom filtering options, auto-reply capability, built-in VPN protection, and the ability to send more emails every day. A professional plan is also available for organizations.

Advantage
  • Two-factor authentication.
  • Send password protected messages to anyone.
  • Import CSV contact lists.

CounterMail-1024x723.jpg

If you are seriously concerned about your email privacy, CounterMail offers a secure implementation of OpenPGP encrypted email in the browser. CounterMail servers only store encrypted emails.

In addition, the servers (located in Sweden) do not store email on hard drives. All data is stored on CD-ROM only. This method helps prevent data leakage, and the moment someone tries to tamper with the server directly, data is likely to be lost.

With CounterMail, you can also configure your USB stick to further encrypt your email. The decryption key is stored on the device and is also required to log into your account. Thus, decryption is not possible even if a hacker steals your password.

The added physical security of the USB device makes CounterMail less easy and convenient to use than other secure email services, but you get IMAP and SMTP access that can be used with any OpenPGP-enabled email program such as K-9 Mail for Android. ...

After a week's free trial, purchase a plan to continue using the service. The trial version includes 100 MB of free space.

Mailfence software is not available for inspection because it is not open source, which makes it less secure and confidential.
