The U.S. has proposed new rules for car dealers that will teach a lot about privacy.
The US Department of Commerce has proposed to require car dealers to place data privacy information stickers on the windshield of cars. Stickers should inform buyers whether car data is collected and sold, as well as how to opt out of surveillance.
The label should be clear and concise, similar to existing Monroney labels that provide fuel efficiency and safety data. The sticker may also have a QR code that leads to more detailed privacy information.
The move comes amid concerns about how automakers are using data from connected cars. A 2023 study by the Mozilla Foundation found that many auto companies do not protect customer data well and rarely explain how it is used. The report also recommends that IoT devices, such as smart thermostats or cameras, enable users to opt out of data collection entirely.
However, the Automotive Innovation Association, which represents the interests of automakers, did not support the proposal. According to the organization, auto companies are already informing consumers about data collection.
The Ministry of Commerce also proposed mandatory regulation of the collection and use of data in IoT devices. Industry experts believe that the new privacy sticker could help people understand that their cars can share data with manufacturers and third-party companies, which many don't realize.
Creating a universal anti-surveillance system for IoT devices will be a complex and costly process, and developers of such devices may be against it due to high costs. But experts are confident that this is necessary to protect users, since devices can collect a large amount of personal information, up to video and audio inside the house. The report's recommendations will be shared with a federal working group that will decide whether legislative changes are needed to implement the proposed measures.
