The High Court in London was not satisfied with the assurances of the US authorities about the fate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the event of his extradition and decided that a full hearing should be held on this issue.

In mid-April, after the judicial authority allowed Assange to appeal the decision on his extradition, the United States government sent official statements to the UK, according to which they promised "not to demand the death sentence and carry it out."

Initially, in January 2021, the Central Criminal Court in London concluded that Assange's extradition was impossible due to his mental state and possible conditions of detention in the United States. In December 2021, this position was reviewed by the High Court in London, which took into account new guarantees received from American representatives in February.

The United States pledged not to allow Assange to be subjected to "special administrative measures", and also assured that he will not be placed in the ADX facility (maximum security prison in Colorado) either during the consideration of his case or after. At the same time, it was argued that Assange could be transferred to Australia, of which he is a citizen, to serve his sentence if he is eventually found guilty. It was also about getting the necessary clinical and psychological treatment.

Assange tried to appeal the position of the lower courts to the Supreme Court of Great Britain, but the latter denied him this right, because, as explained by a panel of three judges of the highest court of the United Kingdom, the petition of the WikiLeaks founder did not raise "a question of law that causes controversy."

In April 2022, Westminster Magistrates Court in London issued a formal extradition order for Assange to the United States. After that, the documents were submitted to the British Home Secretary Priti Patel for consideration.

In mid-May 2022, Assange turned directly to Patel with arguments against his extradition.

Patel signed the extradition request on June 17, 2022, after she said British courts found no reason to believe that Assange's extradition went against human rights protections, including the right to a fair trial and freedom of expression, and that he would be treated improperly in the United States. In July 2022, the founder of WikiLeaks appealed to the High Court of London in connection with the decision of the head of the British Foreign Office.

In the United States, Assange, 52, is charged with 18 counts, including espionage, related to the release by WikiLeaks of a huge number of US confidential military reports and diplomatic cables that put, according to Washington, people's lives at risk.
