In places where people spend money, there is always a risk of running into scammers. The internet is no exception. Rather, on the contrary: there are much more crooks here.

Burnt-out swindlers, sitting behind bars, find ways to connect to the network in order to steal money from respectable inhabitants. Even schoolchildren who have not been taught to respect the law, using imaginary anonymity, are happy to cheat on the Internet.

Therefore, the security of payments with a bank card in the virtual space is at a high level. If the user himself does not disclose confidential information to the scammers, they will not have a single chance.

3D Secure technology is just about that. Authorization of payments is as reliable as possible, and you only need to worry about your own care in online stores, where the user enters card details.

3D Secure: what is it

3D Secure is a protocol for protection during authorization, without the presence of a card, when payment for goods or services occurs. It was first used by the international payment system Visa, then, with minor changes, it was adopted by other MPS as well.

The protocol adds an additional stage of user authentication when making a transaction online. This allows the bank or merchant to ensure that the transaction is being carried out by the cardholder and not by fraudsters.

3D in this case, of course, does not mean special effects, as in the cinema. This is a system when, during the payment process, three domains are checked: the domain of the bank cooperating with the online store, the domain of the bank of the card holder and the domain of the payment system.

How 3D Secure technology works

Most often, via SMS.

The client, making a purchase on the website, is redirected to the page of the bank that issued the card. Here, in a special field, you must enter the one-time code that came in the message to the phone attached to the card. The validity of the code does not exceed 5 minutes, then you will have to request a new password.

Do not give your SMS password to strangers, even bank employees. This information is just for you.

Some banks do not use one-time codes, but only require the password that the user specified during registration, which is not so secure.

The feature is free and standard for Visa and MasterCard. If it is not connected, there are four ways to remedy the situation:
  1. Through Internet banking, in your personal account.
  2. At an ATM owned by the issuing financial institution.
  3. By making a call to the bank.
  4. By making a request to the manager in the office.
Not all online stores support 3D Secure technology. On such resources, for a purchase, you only need to know the details: the number and code CVV2 / CVC2. Anyone who has this information can use the card, since payments will go through without confirmation by SMS or username and password.

If the marketplace supports secure payments, this is indicated by the inscription: Verified by Visa (VbV) or MasterCard Secure Code.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to deactivate the service, for example, abroad or by changing the phone number. If this is not possible in your online banking account, you will have to contact the bank with a written application. Some banks provide the ability to change the phone number without disabling the protection.

A little more about security

Technology has gone to great lengths to improve the security of online payments. The safety of savings depends mainly on the actions of the user.
  • Ignore calls and messages with questions about personal data and card details. This is confidential information.
  • Check your card balance. If you suspect unauthorized debiting of money from your account, contact the bank.
  • Remember the bank number from which you receive SMS with information. Don't trust other short numbers.
  • Control documents with card details: statements, checks and the like. If they are not needed, it is better to destroy them.
  • Check the reliability of the site where you enter the card data. This can be seen in the address bar: secure protocol https: // .
  • Check software on your computer and smartphone for viruses.
In the event that both the phone and the card are lost by the owner, it is worth immediately contacting the bank employees and blocking the movement on the account.
