ATM fraud is rampant all over the world. Cases of skimming have become especially frequent, when criminals steal a user's account number and PIN using remote devices. ATM skimming is becoming a high-tech art that is difficult to detect. And often only the cardholder himself can protect his finances, observing basic safety standards.

Experts say that worldwide skimming losses are approaching $ 1 billion. This is bad news for users. Nearly one in five fraud victims reported that criminals gained access to their card number and PIN by skimming.

This technology is not new - its first cases were recorded about 10 years ago. However, skimming is improving every year. Typically, fraudsters use two devices to intercept PIN and card information. One of them is installed in the card slot and reads its number. The second device - the camera - is installed in such a way as to see the PIN-code at the moment of entering it.

The rescue of drowning people is the work of the drowning people themselves. Cardholders are required to remember and follow the basic rules for safe ATM transactions in order to protect and preserve their finances.

1. Cover the keypad while entering the PIN.

As mentioned above, the hidden camera that captures your PIN is most often directed at the keyboard. Thus, by covering the process of entering the security code with your palm, you deprive fraudsters of access to basic information.

2. Use familiar ATM machines and limit the number of visits.

Using ATM machines in poorly lit areas or late at night puts yourself in danger. Additionally, experts advise staying away from ATM machines in retail stores or restaurants. Devices installed in airports and large shopping centers are also at risk of fraudulent attacks - in short, all ATMs outside bank branches. You should also limit the number of ATM visits - the lower the frequency, the lower the risk, experts say.

3. Check your bank account balance more often.

Despite the fact that there is no specific deadline for filing an appeal with the bank regarding the alleged fraud, the faster you react, the faster the problem will be resolved. Therefore, it is best to subscribe to notifications about all transactions with your account (for example, connect mobile banking) and report all suspicious transactions to the bank.

4. Examine the ATM.

Experts advise card users to check the ATM, in particular the card slot, for suspicious elements. Often, at ATMs targeted by fraudsters, the card slot may appear slightly altered, or the keyboard overlay is visible. In this case, it is better to immediately pick up the card and use another ATM.

At the beginning of 2021, there were about 40,000 ATMs in Ukraine, and each of them is prone to fraud. We cannot know which one is dangerous to us. But we can follow the elementary rules of transactions at ATMs, which will allow us to protect ourselves and our finances.
